Why doesn’t New Mexico have an In-n-Out Burger restaurant?

In N Out Burger is a chain food restaurant that opened in 1948. It currently has locations in Texas, Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. It has not begun to plan to locate to Albuquerque, New Mexico in the near future because current expansion is focused on Texas. That does not mean New Mexico won’t be looked at, but at this time, expansion is happening in states the company is currently in.

In N Out Burger is selective in where it will locate in order to keep the business quality strong. Albuquerque’s population sits at 556,495 as of the 2013 census. This is very low compared to where current locations are sitting. In Arizona, even the smallest locations are near metropolis Phoenix. In Texas they are near Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. In Utah the smaller locations are near Salt Lake City. In Nevada they are near Las Vegas. With Albuquerque being the biggest city in New Mexico, there are no other surrounding cities that could help support a location.

Another factor that goes into a new location is available space. If there is not sufficient land area, then In N Out Burger will consider other states with more land area first. In N Out Burger is a private company and because of that they would not disclose how they go about finding and purchasing land. It is unclear how long it takes for a location to open once land is available. It is also unclear why some locations have been opened before others and why smaller states like Nevada and Utah have any locations at all.

Jessica of In N Out Burger Customer Support located at corporate headquarter in Irvine, California says the company wants to expand further, but that it takes time. “Unfortunately, since we are a private company we do not give out too much information for our company,” Jessica said. The process is not easy to determine where to expand.

There’s always people calling in asking for a location to be put somewhere. “We’re always documenting, when someone says ‘Hey I want a location here’,” Jessica said. It’s such a popular business that the company sees more demand than they can fill.

In N Out Burger is unique from other chain food restaurants because it offers extremely fresh and healthy food. “We develop our own meat . It takes a lot of looking into locations to process if our poultry can be made there. It takes a lot of time to do that,” Jessica said.

On the company website customers can get a feel for just that. “We have built a reputation for fresh, made-to-order foods prepared and served by friendly, well-trained Associates,” InNOut.com.

While it seems like a relatively easy task to locate somewhere, In N Out Burger must account for many factors to keep the food fresh. The biggest challenge Albuquerque poses is that it is too far away from the main distribution centers in Dallas and Northern and Southern California.

Cherie of sales provided the most promising information about the possibility of a location coming to Albuquerque. She said she would let the real estate department that Albuquerque is eager to have an In N Out Burger. She emphasized the importance of having the same quality of food and customer service as a main reason why In N Out Burger does not have plans to locate to Albuquerque at this time. “We plan on expanding as far as we can in the United States, particularly into areas in which our customers have expressed interest,” Cherie said.

Don’t get your hopes down that In N Out won’t ever locate to Albuquerque. “While we hope to make it to Albuquerque someday, our slow growth plans will prevent us from getting there in the near-term future,” Carl Van Fleet, Vice President of Planning and Development said.

Unless you are in the state of Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada or Texas don’t count on an In N Out Burger anytime soon. The time of the process takes the company years in advance to plan for a new location.
